Finally: Consistent Brian Malcolm Breaks Through For First-Career Thunder Mountain Speedway Modified Victory; Spoonhower (Shayne & Chance), Deinhardt, Lamphere, Peters, Crandall & Forward Also Score Victories
CENTER LISLE, NY – Brian Malcolm is finally a winner at Thunder Mountain Speedway.
Malcolm, of Lake Ariel, Pa., had been a picture of consistency during the first half of the 2014 season – his first as a Thunder Mountain regular – with numerous top-three finishes. On Saturday, Malcolm broke into Victory Lane for the first time in the 30-lap big-block/small-block Modified main event.
Malcolm earned $1,200 for his triumph and also picked his own name for a free American Racer tire via a random post-race drawing for the Lias Tire incentive program.
“Finally, I won one here,” Malcolm said after holding off his Tom Coar and Chris Clark Racing teammate, current point leader Brent Wilcox. “We’ve been consistent here all year, but I really wanted to win one.”
Malcolm started fifth in his Sharkey’s Fuels-backed No. 119 Troyer and moved into second by lap three, chasing pole starter Greg Birosh. Each lap, Malcolm worked the inside lane of the three-eighths-mile, banked oval while Birosh was rim-riding on the topside of the speedway.
At the race’s one-third mark, Birosh momentarily bobbled in turn two. Malcolm was the leader at the line for lap 11.
“He (Birosh) was running good,” Malcolm said. “He was fast last week, too. He hit the cushion wrong that lap and it have me a chance to get by. My car was good on the bottom.”
Two circuits later, Wilcox pressed his No. 27 into second and began his pursuit of the lead.
The race’s final caution flew on lap 16. When racing resumed, 14th-starter Chad Cook came to life on the outside lane. Cook swept into third at lap 18, took over second on lap 19 and appeared poised to power around Malcolm for the lead when the left-rear tire went down on his Mike Costello-owned No. 222 on the 22nd lap. His bid for two consecutive victories deflated as Cook went to the pits.
Malcolm held the advantage for the final eight laps for the checkered, his second overall of ’14. He previously annexed a feature win at Penn Can (Pa.) Speedway, his Friday home, earlier this year.
Wilcox, of Binghamton, N.Y., extended his point lead with a runner-up finish. Chris Stull, in his third outing with his ‘X’ Modified, posted his second top-five effort, placing third after starting ninth. Bob Henry Jr. of Clay, N.Y., drove from 15th to finish fourth and Steve Cummings of Rockdale, N.Y., edged Birosh at the line for fifth.
For the third time this season, Chance Spoonhower of Berkshire, N.Y., was the $700 Sportsman winner. Spoonhower, who started fourth, took over the lead on a fifth-lap restart from Chris Jordan. Spoonhower drove on to take the triumph over Jordan.
Billy Spoonhower, after an early race penalty, recovered for third spot, followed by Eric Leet and the GM 602 Crate-powered No. 25 of Pat Jordan.
Berkshire, N.Y.’s Shayne Spoonhower survived a caution-plagued 12-lap Rookie Sportsman main event to take the victory.  The checkered was Spoonhower’s eighth of ’14.
The dominant season for Steven Deinhardt continued in Street Stock competition. The Deposit, N.Y., driver won his fourth consecutive main event and sixth overall in dominant fashion.
Deinhardt, who started eighth, used the extreme outside of the three-eighths-mile oval to arrive in the top spot on the fifth lap, passing Ricky Davis Sr.
Davis ultimately slapped the turn-four wall at the halfway mark, handing second spot over to Brenton Miller, who chased Deinhardt to the finish. Twelfth-starter Daryl Krebs, Jason Beebe and Rich Sharpsteen completed the front five.
A late-arriving Keith Lamphere of Monroeton, Pa., drove to victory in the 15-lap IMCA-style Modified main event. Lamphere drove from the rear of the field to sweep past Matt Jones and race on for the checkered. Jones settled for second.
Bubba Peters of Sayre, Pa., annexed his third 15-lap Pure Stock main of the year, first fending off Michael Morse, who slapped the backstretch wall, and then thwarting Kevin Garland.
Bob Crandall of Sidney, N.Y., edged Pat Votra by a fender to win the 8-lap Empire Sport Truck main event. Votra settled for second after a last-lap charge to the outside. The win for Crandall was his first since the May 10 opener.
Isaiah Forward of Bouckville, N.Y., took over the lead with a three-wide maneuver on the fourth lap and drove to the 15-lap Four Cylinder event in convincing fashion.
THUNDER THOUGHTS: Despite threatening skies and rain out west, Thunder Mountain completed its program without interruption by the weather. Another big crowd turned out for the event, with residents of Chenango Forks receiving discounted $5 admission….
Heavy track conditions prevailed for the entire evening with minimal dust….
Tough luck for two of the Modified division’s top runners: Mike Mahaney and Ryan Jordan were both eliminated in a first-lap tangle in turn three when Mike Clapperton’s No. M16 spun. Clapperton, too, was done for the night….
Heat winners were Steve Cummings and Brent Wilcox (Modified); Eric Leet and Chris Jordan (Sportsman); Todd Hayward (Rookie Sportsman); Earl Zimmer and Ricky Davis Sr. (Street Stock); Matt Jones (IMCA-style Modified); Bubba Peters (Pure Stock); Pat Votra (Empire Sport Truck); and Mark Wheeler and Isaiah Forward (Four Cylinder).
Racing resumes on Saturday (July 26) with a full program to include Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, IMCA-style Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Empire Sport Trucks ($200-to-win ‘Tailgate Party’ special) and Four Cylinders. Residents of Dryden receive $5 grandstand admission with photo ID.
Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.  Adult grandstand admission is $10. Seniors (65 and over) and students (ages 10-17) pay $8. Kids nine and under are FREE. Pit admission is $30, with no license required.
