CENTER LISLE, NY – 2014 will be an outstanding year to race a big-block/small-block Modified at Thunder Mountain Speedway.
Competitors calling the Center Lisle, N.Y., three-eighths-mile clay oval home on Saturday nights in ’14 will be rewarded handsomely as the division is back to headline the weekly card under the auspices of returning Thunder Mountain owner Karl Spoonhower.
The speedway hosts a pair of open practices on the agenda for April 19 and 26 before swinging open the gates for the official ‘Grand Reopening’ on Saturday, May 3.
Thunder Mountain is a “hot spot” for Saturday Modified racing in the Southern Tier.
The ’14 big-block/small-block Mod champion at Thunder Mountain will earn a hefty $5,000 champion’s share from the point fund. This is a record champion’s take for the Mod division at the facility located 25 miles north of Binghamton.
Weekly 30-lap Modified features at Thunder Mountain will offer $1,200 to win, with $400 reserved for the fifth-place finisher, $200 for 10th and $125 to take the green flag.
On five Saturday nights throughout the season, Modified racers will compete for $1,500 or more to win. The ‘Grand Reopening’ on May 3 offers an increased $1,992 winner’s share, reflecting on the speedway’s inaugural season in 1992. Other extra-money Saturday events are May 31: $1,500-to-win; July 5: $1,776; Aug. 23: $1,523 and Sept. 6, Championship Night: $1,500.
On Labor Day weekend, a ‘Sunday Showdown’ non-points event is set for Aug. 31. The 40-lap main will pay $2,500 to win and a guaranteed starting position in the Alpine Building Supply Short Track SuperNationals presented by Olum’s on Oct. 10-11 at I-88 (N.Y.) Speedway.
The ’14 Thunder Mountain schedule includes a pair of $5,000-to-win races.
On Tuesday, May 20, the National Dirt Racing League (NDRL) Short Track Super Series Fueled By VP heads to Thunder Mountain in the Olum’s ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ presented by Rochinski Contracting Services and Husqvarna. The 50-lap event pays $5,000 to the winner and $500 to take the green flag. There is a rain date of Wednesday, May 21. The ‘Lightning on the Mountain’ is a BD Motorsports Media LLC promotion.
The second $5,000-to-win event is set for Sunday, July 13 when MjH Oilfield Consulting presents the Wade Decker Memorial.
Lias Tire, the regional distributor for American Racer tires, has put together an attractive incentive program for Thunder Mountain Modified racers.
Via the program, Thunder Mountain drivers will be eligible for eight American Racer tires to be given away via random drawings throughout the season. Additionally, the track champion will receive a set of four American Racer tires. Second-place in the final points will receive two tires and third-place will receive one tire. Fourth-place earns a certificate worth $85 toward the purchase of a tire and fifth receives a $50 certificate toward the purchase of a tire.
Drivers need to only to register once to be eligible for the American Racer rewards program. The registration fee is $30. To enter, e-mail thundermtnspeedway@gmail.com for the form.
