News from the Crazy 8s Special – 'Get Crazy At I-88'

For Immediate Release/July 11, 2013
Modified Qualifying Format For Wednesday, July 24 ‘Crazy 8s Special’ At I-88 Speedway Announced; Timed Dashes & Invert To Set Heat-Race Lineups; Pre-Race “Fan Fest” Planned
AFTON, NY – The qualifying format for the inaugural ‘Crazy 8s Special’ at I-88 Speedway has been outlined.
At the first-ever ‘Crazy 8s Special’ event co-promoted by Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC and track managers Ron Ford and Jamie Page, big-block/small-block Modifieds are set to battle for a huge $27,012 purse in a 48-lap main event on Wednesday, July 24 (rain date: July 25).
The winner takes home $6,888 (with $25 88 BC Building Supplies of Nineveh, N.Y., “Gambler’s Fee” posted before qualifying, $4,888 without), $1,488 for fifth, $888 for 10th and $388 to take the green flag. A number of bonuses have been posted in addition to lap money. More than $30,000 will be on the line for Modified drivers at the 3/10ths-mile Afton, N.Y., oval.
Gary Montgomery’s touring 360 BRP CanAm Late Model Series completes the two-division program. The evening will mark a first-time appearance by the Late Models at I-88.
Modifieds will qualify via the following method for the ‘Crazy 8s Special’ event:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Upon entry to the speedway, Modified teams will register and draw for their heat-race group.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->The Modified field will be divided into heat-race groups based upon the draw. The draw sets the groups of drivers timing and racing together in their qualifying events. The number of groups is dependent upon car count.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Heat-race groups will be posted in the pit area.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Each heat-race group will be split in half for purposes of timing.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Each half will be given a two-lap timed dash (green, white, checkered).
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->The timed dash will not replace regular hot laps. The timed dashes will take place following the completion of hot laps.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Timed dash results combining the two halves (taking each driver’s best lap of the two) – incorporating an invert – will determine starting lineups for qualifying heat races.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->An invert will be determined prior to the start of racing and will be posted. The invert is dependent on car count, the number of heat races and cars to qualify from each heat event. The invert will mirror the number of cars to redraw in each heat race.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Behind the inverted fast timers, all other cars will start the heat race heads-up by time.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Top heat-race qualifiers will redraw for the 48-lap feature event.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->All cars MUST have a working transponder. Drivers with transponder issues will be notified following hot laps.
“This is obviously a major, high-paying event for I-88 and we want to provide all racers with a fair shot of getting in the show,” said event co-promoter Deyo. “We believe this format is friendly to our fans, using the invert, and allows racers to set their own fate in a timed dash.”
I-88 co-promoter Jamie Page supports the unique format.
“We invested in the transponder system over the winter and we’re anxious to put it to use for the timed dashes,” Page said. “We like to try different things, especially when we get suggestions from racers and fans.”
Pit gates will open on Wednesday, July 24 at 4 p.m. Grandstand gates swing open at 5 p.m.
A pre-race “Fan Fest” is planned on the horse track starting at 5:30 p.m. for early arriving spectators. Race cars will be on display representing both the Modifieds (locals and invaders) and the BRP CanAm Late Model Series. Drivers will be available for autographs. DJ All-Day Entertainment will provide music during the “Fan Fest” event. There will also be giveaways for fans during the pre-race activities and throughout the night.
Fans will also be treated to collectibles vendors on hand, event apparel and a souvenir program book.
Hot laps begin at 6:30 p.m., with racing set for 7 p.m.
Adult grandstand admission for the first ‘Crazy 8s Special’ is just $16 (ages 15 and older). Students (ages 9-14 years old) are $7 and Kids 8 and under are free. Pit admission is $30. I-88 Speedway members pay $25.
