Rodriguez
Wins First Late Model Feature of the Season at SSP on Saturday Night
Newberrytown,
PA (May 25, 2013) – Dover’s J.R. Rodriguez claimed his first Late Model win of
the season in the 21a Memorial Day Championships in remembrance of Mike Zeigler
Sr. at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday Night. Littlestown’s Randy Zechman won his third
feature of the season in the Street Stock 21 lapper. York’s Travis Horan won the 20-lap Xtreme
Stock Car feature. The 15-lap Road
Warrior feature was won by York Haven’s Daryl Sipe for his fourth
consecutive. Mountville’s Donny Groff
claimed the Mini Van feature. Matt
Wallace of Mt. Airy, Maryland won the 20-lap Classic Car feature event.
Matt Adams
started on the pole position and grabbed the early lead over Randy Stoudt. On
the second circuit, Stoudt took the top spot from Adams. On the same lap, J.R. Rodriguez moved into
the runnerup spot behind Stoudt. Three
laps later, Rodriguez made the pass for the lead on the high side. Stoudt still challenged low but could not
retake the lead from Rodriguez. A
caution with three laps remaining set up a shout-out for the win. On the restart, Rodriguez continued to lead
on the high side. At the finish,
Rodriguez took the win by six car lengths over Stoudt. Billy Wampler finished strong in third,
followed by Chase Billet and Charles Potts.
Nathan Ottensmeyer won the JR’s Paving Hard Charger award for finishing
11th after starting in the 20th position. Rodriguez and Randy Christine Jr. were the
heat race winners.
Josh Bloom
grabbed the early lead from outside the front row in the 21-lap Street Stock
feature. Mike Walls took over the top
spot on the next lap, coming from a sixth placed starting spot. Walls continued to lead with Gary Potts in
pursuit in the runner-up spot. A few
cautions closed up the field, but Wall continued to hold onto the top spot. A caution with one lap remaining set up a one
lap race to the finish between Walls, Potts and Randy Zechman. When the green flag flew, Zechman took over
the second spot, but was unable to catch Walls at the line for the win. However, in post-race tech, Walls was
disqualified for weighing light at the scales, awarding the win to Randy
Zechman. Potts settled for second,
followed by Chris Derr and Bob Scott Jr.
Jim Palm Jr. rounded out the top five.
Scott Jr., Walls and Potts were heat race victors.
The 20-lap
Xtreme Stock Car feature event had Chad Stine take the lead on the start from
outside the front row. As the race
settled in over the beginning of the race, Dan Snyder pursued Stine until lap 8
when Snyder retired from the race with mechanical failure. Travis Horan inherited the runner-up spot but
Stine continued flawlessly in the top spot.
On lap 16, Donnie Broderick made his patented late race charge and took
the runner-up spot from Horan. On the
final lap, Broderick and Stine tangled in turn three, bringing out the yellow
with one lap remaining. Stine retired
from the race and with Broderick in the rear, Horan found himself up front on
the restart. Horan held on to take the
win and an emotional victory after returning from over a year hiatus. Cameron Benyou came across in second,
followed by Johnny Palm and Michael Smith.
Smith was the Madison House Hard Charger after starting in the
14th position. Broderick
rounded out the top five. The heat race
winners were Lomman and McClane.
Daryl Sipe took
the lead on the lap 12 from Curt McDade who led the first 11 circuits of the
15-lap Road Warrior feature. McDade
challenged back for the lead, but at the end, Sipe took his fourth win of the
season over McDade. Wes Kellison
finished in third followed by Dennis Dorosz.
Justin Oberlin rounded out the top five.
Sipe and Robert Wellman were heat race winners.
In the Mini Van
feature, Donny Groff grabbed the lead on lap tow from John Kitner. At the finish, Groff held on for the win over
Zakari Kitner and John Kitner. Zakari
Kitner was the heat race victor.
In the Classic
Cars 20-lap feature event, Matt Wallace wired the field to take the win by
leading from start to finish. Joe
Snodgrass took the runner-up spot over Jim Crocker who finished in third. Steve Cantwell crossed the line in fourth
with Charlie Summers rounding out the top five.
Wallace and Pete Neal were the heat race winners.
