DREW HEISTAND IS ARDC 2012 CANDY BOWL
WINNER
ARDC Completes 2012 Season with Susquehanna
Event
2011 ARDC Champion, Drew Heistand had all the "tricks" he
needed to take the win the "treats" in the final ARDC event of the season at the
Susquehanna Speedway Park's annual Candy Bowl event.
Heistand led every lap after running the high outside line
into turns one and two and then propelling himself past Bruce Buckwalter, Jr. to
take lead as the field exited turn two for the first time. The race was far
from over, however, as Buckwalter proved to be a formidable opponent later in
the event.
As the field headed down the backstretch, Tim Buckwalter
caught a wheel of another car and took a wild ride down the backstretch.
Fortunately, the young driver from Douglassville, PA had already secured the
2012 ARDC Championship two weeks before as day was over almost before it
started. Tim Buckwalter was uninjured in the crash but his mount was seriously
damaged.
Heistand went back to work when racing resumed, leading B.
Buckwalter, Jr., Brett Arndt, Steve Craig and Brenden Bright had a three way
battle for third. Bright advanced his position, taking over fourth on lap five
as Ryan Greth moved up to fifth in the Steward #34.
Bright moved up to third as Greth made his way to fourth
and both drivers looked for the real estate they needed to challenge Buckwalter
for second. Arndt held down the fifth spot through lap fifteen as Greth slipped
by Bright to take over third.
With five laps to go, Ryan Smith, who debuted the Mike
Heffner owned #27, was knocking on the door of the top five contenders.
Buckwalter first closed the gap on Heistand, applying
pressure as the laps counted down. While Buckwalter searched for a viable route
to the lead, Greth was in the cat bird seat just looking for any opportunity to
come his way. Buckwalter was on Heistand when the caution waved with just one
lap to go to the checkered.
Heistand held his position on the restart and won the drag
race to the checkered flag with Bruce Buckwalter, Jr., Ryan Greth in hot
pursuit. Brenden Bright finished fourth ahead of Ryan Smith.
Heistand was expecting Buckwalter's challenge. "I looked at
BJ's (Bruce Buckwalter, Jr.)
tires during the red flag," Heistand explained. "He went with
the right tire and I knew he'd be right there when that tire came in." It was
Heistand's eleventh career win in ARDC competition.
Qualifying heats were won by Bruce Buckwalter, Jr., Dusty
and Drew Heistand.
Race Notes
Steven Drevicki made a strong comeback in the 20 lap main
event. After a quick trip to the pits following the lap one incident, Drevicki
drove the DeGre Engineering #19 to a ninth place finish after restarting in the
rear. Tim Buckwalter is the 2012 ARDC Champion with the Owner's Championship
going to the #49 RT Racing of Dyke and Carey Becker. The last race of the
season is one that Tim Buckwalter is not likely to forget. Mechanical problems
with their tow vehicle delayed the Buckwalter team's arrival at Susquehanna.
Then they suffered a blown motor during warm-ups. The 2012 Champion then jumped
into a second car that originally had Brad Cox slated as the driver. After a
strong run in the qualifier, Tim Buckwalter's day in midget competition ended
"upside down" on the backstretch. He than later led the 600 Micro feature only
to be sidelined with mechanical failure while leading. Congratulations to
Steven and the "new" Mrs. Bull who exchanged their vows during the month of
October. Jim Jackson, Brian Suchy and John Barnett made their first ARDC starts
of the 2012 season at Susquehanna.
