PENN CAN SPEEDWAY GEARS UP FOR EXCITING 2012 SEASON
Susquehanna, Pa…The racing season at Penn Can Speedway is little more than two months away. The 2012 season will open at the Susquehanna County oval with the running of the annual “Can Opener” featuring the five regular divisions competing at the speedway every Friday night during the season. The mighty modifieds will be joined by the 602 sportsman, street stocks, four cylinders, and factory stocks. The off-season has been busy for the staff at Penn Can Speedway and everything looks promising for a great year of racing.
The premier modified division will see 2011 modified champion Kevin Hartnett returns to defend his title. Hartnett will have plenty of competition with the top ten in points all indicating they will return looking to unseat the champion. Kevin Bates will return behind the wheel of the family owned modified. Third place runner Dan Pompey will be a force in the modified ranks again this season. Veteran Mike Colsten will return to the three eighths mile oval will a new car for the coming season.
A very strong class of modified rookies looks to compete for the $500 to win Rookie of the Year title. Sportsman champion Mike Nagel Jr has indicated that he will be part of the class along with Adam MacGeorge, another 602 sportsman standout.
The 602 sportsman division looks to increase in number in 2012. Word has reached the speedway office that a number of new cars are expected at the speedway along with many of the past regulars. Local favorites Alex Stanton, Dusty Barton, and Butch Green are all expected.  Grant Hilfiger, a previous champion, will be returning to the field along with street stock veterans Randy Gates and Rich Talada both moving into the sportsman ranks looking to claim the $1000 point championship.
The street stock field also looks to be strong. College commitments may make it impossible for 2011 champion Shane Wolf to defend his championship. That will open the championship chase up for any of the competitors to claim. Ryan and Chad Stone will be looking to improve their positions for last season. With the new purse for the up-coming season announced, interest has been strong from many race teams planning to call Penn Can home in 2012.
The new season will also feature many new events for the competitors in all divisions. One of the new features at the speedway is that any driver not qualifying in all divisions will receive compensation each race night. Speedway management realizes the expense of racing and wants to see teams return week after week the entire season. Hopefully this small gesture will help out each team racing at Penn Can. The purse structure in all support divisions has also been revamped for the season with the hopes of helping race teams return each week.
For more information about racing at Penn Can Speedway call the track office at 570-585-9928 or on the web at www.penncan.com. The speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania just a short drive from both the Binghamton and Scranton areas. The speedway is sponsored in part for the 2012 season by great corporate partners including Don’s Automotive Mall, Gary’s U-Pull-It, Pump-N-Pantry Stores, Trackside Products, Pine Line Auto, Hornbeck Chevrolet, NEP Wireless, American Race Tires, Adams Cable, and VP Race Fuels.
