BOTT, BIRDSALL AND RUMMEL EARN NEETS BEATERS WITH HEATERS VICTORIES AT
WALL STADIUM SPEEDWAY…
January 14, 2012 – Wall Township, NJ – Howie “Dr. Destruction” Bott
nursed his ailing machine to a victory in Saturday’s 150-lap Big Car
Enduro at Wall Stadium Speedway. Dan Birdsall captured his first
career NEETS Enduro triumph in the 150-lap Small Car affair while
Linsey “The Rocket” Rummel cruised to her second career Wall Speedway
win in the 25-lap Ladies Race.
The “Santa’s Sleigh 150” for the 6/8 Cylinder division featured
28-cars and rolled to a traditional three-wide start. Matt Guadango,
from the second spot, cruised into the early race lead until he was
overtaken by veteran enduro competitor Glen Osborne, who started from
ninth. Osborne remained in control and lapped the field until the
event’s first red flag period on lap 51. Chris Burns made hard
front-end impact with the guardrail just below the scoreboard in turn
two.
When green flag racing continued, Osborne proceeded to lead the
event, while Lee Allen (originally started tenth) settled into the
runner-up position over Guadango and Bott, who began the contest from
seventh. Guadango needed a pit stop which would lead to a classic
confrontation between Allen and Bott for the runner-up position. Bott,
a highly successful enduro racer out of Budd Lake NJ, edged ahead of
Allen and attempted to pursue the race leader Osborne. Drama soon
unfolded as Osborne made contact with a spinning car on the
backstretch and later pitted with a flat tire.
During several occasions last season, Bott was primed for a front
running finish, only to have bad luck steal it away. It nearly
happened once more. Bott’s #75 Camaro began to trail smoke during the
closing stages, leaking fluid along the way. Bott almost lost the
handle while racing through the second corner but executed a master
save out of the turn and continued on. Bott’s machine literally
sputtered to the checkered flag, collecting the NEETS season opening
victory.
In the final moments, Bott’s misfortune also brought about a
slippery speedway for his opponents. Allen registered a runner-up
position in his #97 car followed by Chris Felber, who started fourth
and executed a fine race to end up in third. Marty VanDruten, who
finished 6th in Wall Stadium Factory Stock points last year, salvaged
a fourth place finish. Tim O’Shea made the long haul from 20th to
fifth in the final rundown.
The “Jingle Bell 150” for the 4 Cylinders found Scott Dunn
blasting into the race lead from his outside front row starting spot.
Birdsall dropped to the inside of Dunn in turn two of the fifth
circuit to become the new pace setter. A few laps later while racing
through traffic, Birdsall and Dunn split a lapped machine in turn two.
After contact with the lapped car, Dunn’s car spun around, came across
the track, and rolled over on the inner side of the backstretch.
Miraculously, Dunn landed on all four wheels and continued on. The red
flag was thrown for the incident, and Dunn was able to restart the
event.
Pat Hires worked past Birdsall for the race lead, and the top
four of Hires, Birdsall, Dave Bentley Jr. and Dunn raced closely.
While leading the event, a spindle snapped on the #2JR sending Hires’
tire loose down the backstretch. The end result found Hires
relinquishing the top spot to Birdsall. During the remaining laps,
Birdsall, who hails out of Brick NJ, lead the entire distance.
Birdsall followed up his runner-up finish in last season’s finale (Nov
27) with a hard earned victory. After an intense battle, Mike Wahl
made his way into the runner-up spot. Wahl, who finished fourth in a
Mountain (PA) Speedway enduro the previous week, drove that very same
car to a second place result. 2009 NEETS dirt-car series champion
Bentley finished third and Dunn cruised to a fourth pace effort. Well
established enduro racer Ken Wallace rounded out the front finishing
five.
The 25-lap “Mrs. Clause” Ladies Race concluded the afternoon’s
festivities. WRAT 95.9’s Melissa Festa was the pole sitter, but Linsey
Rummel wasted no time in taking the initial race lead. Despite getting
slightly held up in an accident out of the second corner, Rummel
continued to lead and never looked back. Driving Phil Levering’s
trusty #L39, Rummel (a winner at three different speedways last
season) started 2012 with an impressive victory. Jeanie Sheehan had a
few excursions throughout the race and survived to finish in the
runner-up spot followed by Allisa Prince, Anna Sheehan and MaryAnn
Miele.
The NEETS Series will return to action in the month of March with
races at Wall Stadium Speedway (March 10) and Grandview (PA) Speedway
(March 31). NEETS will also be competing at the New Egypt (NJ)
Speedway in 2012 as part of an exciting and aggressive schedule. For
