News from the Clash at the Can - 'Making history, one dollar at a time'

For Immediate Release/December 12, 2011

Tuesday, June 12 Date Set For $10,000 'Clash at the Can' at Penn Can Speedway; All-Time Highest Paying Penn Can Speedway Event Offers Race of Champions Combination Points
SUSQUEHANNA, PA - Take a page out of the Penn Can Speedway record book, rip it out and discard it.
Again in 2012, the team of special events promoter Brett Deyo and track managers Reed Miller and Al Wilcox will make history at the Susquehanna, Pa., one-third-mile oval. On Tuesday, June 12, the 'Clash at the Can' offers a record winner's share of $10,000 for a 60-lap big-block/small-block Modified event.
The total purse - in addition to the winner's share - is expected to hit record numbers with a minimum of $300 reserved to take the green flag.
The payout eclipses the wildly successful '11 running of the 'Clash at the Can' which paid winner Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., more than $8,000. A 66-car field of Modifieds turned out for that event, dubbed by many the most talented roster of dirt Modified racers assembled at any speedway, anywhere last season.
"This is definitely an unheard of, unprecedented event for Penn Can and the Southern Tier region," said Deyo, who first teamed with Miller and Wilcox in June 2010 for midweek race promotions at the facility on the Keystone State side of the New York/Pennsylvania border in Susquehanna County.
"My goal as a promoter has always been to reward the competitors, the owners and drivers who make our events possible. Last year, when Reed, Al and I announced we would pay $8,000 to win the 'Clash' we said that amount could climb with good support. A full grandstand and 66 Modifieds was great support in my mind and we're making good on our word.
"Again this year, we are making history, one dollar at a time!"
The 'Clash at the Can' will offer combination points on the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour title race of 2012. Two regions will comprise the '12 RoC schedule. At the 'Clash at the Can' fans will enjoy stars of the North and South colliding in an epic short-track battle.
Due to the length of last year's 'Clash at the Can' program, event management has decided to drop one class from the program and opt for a fan-friendly two-division work-week show.
"The 'Clash' is quickly becoming a must-see event on the Penn Can schedule," said Penn Can co-promoter Reed Miller. "We took great pride in the field we had last year. It was certainly an highlight for us in our time at Penn Can."
Wilcox, the owner of Endicott, N.Y., speed shop Trackside Products who has managed Penn Can's operations with Miller since 1997, said the 'Clash' exposes Penn Can to a new and diverse group of racers and fans.
"That show brings out a group of race fans and drivers who have never seen the place or hadn't been to Penn Can in a long time," Wilcox said. "It's always positive to show those people the side-by-side racing we have to offer. We've been proud that our local drivers have been able to hold their own against some of the best in the business."
In its two previous runnings, the 'Clash at the Can' main event has evolved into a standoff between Modified superstars and weekend warriors.
Last June, it was eventual RoC champion Decker, driving John Wight's Gypsum Racing No. 91, besting Accord (N.Y.) Speedway weekend racer Danny Tyler of Cottekill, N.Y. The upstart Tyler led much of the event, proved a formidable match for Decker and guided his family owned No. 22 home to second.
The star of the '10 'Clash at the Can' was Carbondale, Pa.-based Penn Can regular Brett Tonkin, whose No. 15 repelled the advances of eventual victor Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., using the outside lane.
"The small track is a great equalizer," Deyo said. "We've shown repeatedly that the little guy can compete with the big teams at Penn Can. The track is racy, tire wear is non-existent and powerful, expensive engines aren't the key to success. It is no exaggeration that 'anyone' can win this race."
A lap sponsorship program - at $20 per lap - will be in place for the 'Clash at the Can' event. Interested parties should contact Brett Deyo by e-mail at Deyo99h@aol.com or via phone: 845.728.2781. All lap money raised will go directly to the racers. Please note all lap money does not have to be awarded to the driver leading the event. Special awards and bonuses are also being sought. Contact Deyo to get involved.
A liberal rules package will be announced as the event nears.
BD Motorsports Media has plans for an expansive display at Motorsports 2012 presented by Small Engine Fuels Jan. 20-22 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa. Last year, BD took home the Best Speedway/Series display at the Len Sammons Motorsports Productions event.
