Loux Xcels in Kutztown Mod Tour; Ross, Christman, & Schumaker Also Victorious
Kutztown, Pa. - August 18 - George Loux really wanted to win a race at the Kutztown Fair Speedway, and he made it happen on Thursday night, during the annual Kutztown Fair. While it was certainly a special night for George, it may have meant even more for his crew chief/father Ken, as his car won two of the three features in which it was entered.
Loux, from Lincoln University, Pa., triumphed in the 20-lap main event for the Xcel 600 Modified Tour. Joining Loux in Thursday's winner's circle were Tyler Ross (Xcel Sportsman Modifieds), Nate Christman (Celebrity Match Race), and Daniel Schumaker (Outlaw Quads).
Driving the Campbell Supply Co. 48G, Loux bolted into the lead from his pole starting spot as the Xcel 600 Modified Tour began its 20 lap feature.
A three-wide scrap for the runner-up position saw Justin Schraden climb the backstretch wall and nearly flip. The incident forced an early caution period, the first of four yellows that would temporarily slow the pace of the race.
With Loux in front and in command, eighth-starting Richie Hitzler was navigating his way through the pack. Hitzler charged into second prior to the halfway point, then took advantage of a yellow to begin his assault on the leader as the raced went back to green flag conditions.
Loux ran the top while Hitzler worked the bottom groove. Loux's momentum kept him in front as they accelerated off each corner, with the eyes of the large Kutztown Fair crowd firmly fixed on the battle for the lead.
Aaron Bowes and Nick Mady were slicing their way through the field as well, with Bowes slipping past Alec Bartholomew for third as the race entered its second half. Mady moved up to challenge Bartholomew for fourth as the laps clicked off quickly.
Hitzler drove his heart out trying to pass Loux, and his night reached a disappointing conclusion as he made one final attempt to pull even with the leader. On the last lap, Hitzler drove it hard into turns one and two, and the car simply did not stick, causing Hitzler to spin at the exit of turn two.
That set up a one lap dash to the finish with Loux now in front of Bowes, Bartholomew, and Mady. Loux sprinted away as the green waved, and Mady went to the top, creating a three-way battle royale for the runner-up slot.
As Loux pulled away by a few car-lengths, Mady sailed his car into three and four, passing Bartholomew and drawing almost even with Bowes. Loux crossed the line with a margin of two-tenths of a second over Bowes, who nipped Mady for second. Bartholomew wound up fourth, and Michael Burrows finished fifth.
With 26 cars signed in for competition, heat race victories went to Schraden, Mady, and Ryan Kunkle.
A short field of Xcel Sportsman Mods caused Ken Loux bring a "hired gun" with him to Kutztown, and enter his car in both the Xcel Tour event and the Sportsman activities. And the "hired gun" proved to be a very good decision...
600cc Micro-Sprint ace Tyler Ross, also from Lincoln University, Pa., adapted to the Xcel Mod quickly and easily. So quickly and easily, in fact, that Ross swept the Sportsman action, winning the single heat race and the 15-lap main event.
It wasn't a walk in the park for "T. Ross the Boss", however, as he was challenged throughout the feature by Chad Mullen. Late in the race, Alex Tonkin made it a three-car tussle for the top spot, and then things got really exciting.
With Ross and Mullen side-by-side, Tonkin threaded the needle off turn two, shooting through the middle to put the nose of his No. 403 in front. Blasting through three and four on the high side, Ross rocketed back to the head of the pack, reclaiming the lead as the trio reached the start/finish line.
Ross then motored away to a fairly comfortable advantage, winning by 1.2 seconds over Tonkin. Mullen crossed the stripe in third, with 600cc Micro-Sprint chauffeur Kyle Lick and Ray Horning finishing fourth and fifth. Lick was driving Ryan Suchon's RAACE Foundation No. 37.
At this point in the final racing program of the year at Kutztown, Ken Loux and his No. 48G were two-for-two. Next up was a Celebrity Match Race, pitting some of the area's dirt Modified and Late Model drivers against one another in Xcel Modifieds. Loux had Grandview Late Model standout Chuck Schutz buckle into his car for the Match Race.
Schutz would finish fourth in the ten-lap affair that went right down to the final revolution before the winner was decided. Doug Manmiller, the 2010 point champion of Big Diamond Speedway's 358 Modifieds, rode the high side and led nine of the ten circuits.
A two-time point champ in Kutztown's All Star Slingshot division, Nate Christman wheeled Andy Ressler's No. 10 to the inside of Manmiller, drawing even in turns one and two on the last lap. The duo, who compete against one another on Saturday nights in their 358 Modifieds at Grandview, raced wheel-to-wheel down the backchute before Christman nosed in front in three and four. Christman, from Oley, Pa., beat Manmiller to the checkered by a narrow margin, with Alex Tonkin finishing third.
Daniel Schumaker won the Outlaw Quad race over a field of nineteen other riders, with Zachary Schumaker finishing second. Ryan Mohr came from deep in the starting field to place third, with Kyle Laird and Tyler Kehs rounding out the top five.
