Big Diamond Speedway Announces Exciting Schedule For 2011 - Returning Traditions, New Events & Fan Favorites Planned For 39th Season



MINERSVILLE, PA - There will be no shortage of excitement during the 2011 season at Big Diamond Speedway. The schedule for the 39th year of auto racing at the clay oval in Coal Country features returning tradition, unique new events and fan-favorite items sure to satisfy the tastes of of racers and fans alike.



The 2011 Season Opener is planned for Sunday, April 3 with The Station House 358-Modifieds, U.S.S. Achey Sportsman and Wooden Keg Tavern Roadrunners opening their point championship battles. The 358-Mods will be featured in a 35-lap feature paying $3,000 to the winner. Sunday racing, with a 5 p.m. start time, continues on April 10 and 17.



Following a break with no racing on Easter weekend (April 22-24), Friday action kicks off April 29 with an 8:15 p.m. start time. Points racing continues through the final Friday in August.



A series of five Community Nights have been established by speedway management (April 17, May 6, July 1, July 15 and Aug. 26). Residents from 21 surrounding towns, divided into groups, will be admitted for $10 adult general admission with proof of residence on the aforementioned race nights. The selected communities will rotate each season.



T102 of Pottsville, Pa., featuring the "best songs on the radio" at 101.9 FM presents the popular "Pack the Track Night" with $8 adult general admission on Aug. 5 with the 358-Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners on the card.



The 358-Modifieds will partake in several specials including a $3,000-to-win 'Freaky Friday' 35-lapper on May 13 and the return of the Georgie Stevenson Memorial, a 40-lap, $4,000-to-win event plus spectacular fireworks on Sunday, July 3. The Georgie Stevenson Memorial also offers a coveted guaranteed starting spot in the Short Track SuperNationals Oct. 8 at Five Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway. Sportsman and Roadrunners are included on the Georgie Stevenson program.



The Coalcracker 100 paying $10,000 to the winner remains Big Diamond's marquee 358-Mod event and the 31st edition is set for Sunday, Sept. 4. Duane Howard of Oley, Pa., is the defending Coalcracker 100 winner.



The popular one-on-one challenge races return for each of the three weekly divisions. Shiley Fabrication presents the Sportsman Challenge June 10. The Roadrunner Wooden Keg Tavern 'Chicken Wing Challenge' is planned for July 15 and the Coca-Cola Classic Challenge for 358-Modifieds is Aug. 19. The top-11 drivers present in the standings will be invited to participate in the match races.



The Sportsman division is featured in a Coalcracker 50 Qualifier paying $1,000 to win for 25 laps on July 29. The seventh edition of the Coalcracker 50 takes place on Sept. 2.



For the Roadrunners, the 'Full Fender Frenzy' Twin 15s are set for June 24. The Roadrunners will be featured in an extra-distance event during the Coalcracker weekend (Sept. 4).



Touring divisions have not been forgotten on the '11 schedule. The Rislone United Racing Company Sprint Cars invade on July 8 for 'Wing Night' at Big D. The 358-Modifieds will be outfitted with sail panels for the evening and race fans can take part in a hot wing eating contest in the grandstand area.



Winged 410 Sprint Cars return to Diamond as part of a doubleheader with the ARDC Midgets Monday, May 30 - Memorial Day. The ARDC contingent is back on the schedule again July 22.



The Race of Champions Dart Dirt Modified Tour, last featured at Big Diamond in 2006, will return Wednesday, June 22 with the 'Anthracite Assault' 60 plus RoC Sportsman and XCel 600 Modifieds. The RoC event is a Race of Champions Motorsports/BD Motorsports Media production.



The Doug Borger-created XCel 600 Modifieds visit on July 1 and Sept. 2 in addition to the midweek RoC event. The XCel 600 Modifieds have proven to bring large fields to all scheduled race dates.



Five Enduro events are planned for the '11 season on Sundays (May 15, June 26, July 24, Aug. 21 and Sept. 11). Enduro coordinator Jake Smulley will be announcing specifics in the coming weeks.



The Fairlane Village Mall in Pottsville, Pa., hosts the kickoff with the Big Diamond Speedway Race Car Show March 7-12. Registration is underway now at http://www.bdmotorsportsmedia.com/.

Reserved Parking Available

Reserved parking spots are available for race teams in 2011. Teams may request their desired parking spot. If the spot is available, it will be marked with the driver's name and car number. The spot will be valid for one full season. The cost of a reserved pit spot is $100. This is entirely a voluntary program. Send requests, with payment, to Big Diamond Speedway at 50 Big Diamond Road, P.O. Box 524, Minersville, PA 17954. There are 148 spots available.



Head Starter Hired

Veteran race official Galen Koller has been hired by Big Diamond management to serve as head starter for the '11 season. Koller, who has served in a similar capacity at several different speedways over an accomplished career, will be on the flagstand three nights per week in the coming season, with Saturdays at Lincoln (Pa.) Speedway and Wednesdays at the Kutztown (Pa.) Fairgrounds Speedway.



Fast Lap Rewarded

Gary Shiley of Shiley Fabrication in Williamstown, Pa., rewards the drivers turning the fastest feature laps weekly in the 358-Modified and Sportsman divisions with $25 cash. Shiley Fabrication is on the web at http://www.shileyfabrication.com/.
