Huge Opening Day Crowd Turns Out To View 113 Race Cars On Display At Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show presented by Reading Eagle and WEEU 830 AM

READING, PA - Off to a good start.

A banner opening day crowd jammed the Fairgrounds Square Mall Sunday for the opening of the 25th annual Racing Legends Reunion & Car Show presented by Reading Eagle and WEEU 830 AM.

Attendees were treated to 113 race cars on display at the former site of the famed Reading Fairgrounds Speedway on 5th Street Highway in Muhlenberg Township. The event continues through Saturday (Feb. 27) with nightly activities planned.

"We received plenty of positive comments about the show today," said event organizer Brett Deyo. "The quality of cars this year was outstanding and we have tremendous participation from tracks, sanctioning bodies, exhibitors and vendors."

The show features a wide cross-section of racing vehicles, including vintage/restored cars, big- and small-block Modifieds, Late Models, Sprint Cars, ARDC Midgets, SpeedSTR Midgets, Sportsman, Roadrunners, Micro-Sprints, XCel 600 Modifieds, Slingshots, Go-Karts, Quarter Midgets and more.

Center court, anchored by the restored Glenn Hyneman-owned, Craig Von Dohren-driven No. 126, nostalgic Freddy Adam No. 8 and modern-day Kevin Hirthler No. 117 Modified, was bustling throughout the day.

The Reading Fairgrounds Speedway Historical Society organized an impressive tribute to the famed speedway that hosted its final race in 1979.

Kerry Meitzler's No. 3k, a small-block Modified run last during Penn National (Pa.) Speedway's final 1996 season, drew plenty of attention. The former Tri-Track racer from Kutztown, Pa., pulled the car from storage to partake in the Penn National tribute at the show.

NEETS promoter Joe Cutri took the stage Sunday afternoon and offered a comprehensive presentation on getting started in Enduro racing.

Among the 2010 show exhibitors are Grandview (Pa.) Speedway, Big Diamond (Pa.) Raceway, Kutztown Fairgrounds (Pa.) Speedway, Thunder on the Hill Racing Series, URC, Reading Eagle, Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc., Speedway Entertainment (Slingshots and SpeedSTRs), Reading Fairgrounds Speedway Historical Society, RAACE Foundation, Doug Borger's XCel 600 Modifieds, Gary Silverman Productions, Dale Snyder Video, Clyde Martin Memorial (Pa.) Speedway, Bob Hilbert Sportswear, Keystone State Quarter Midget Club, the NEETS Enduro Series and the Montgomery County Quarter Midget Racing Club

The show resumes tomorrow (Monday, Feb. 22) with Open Wheel Night presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc., with ARDC, URC and the SpeedSTR Series in the spotlight. On-stage interviews begin at 7 p.m.

Scheduled to appear are URC champion J.J. Grasso, URC star Davey Sammons, ARDC champion Frank Polimeda, versatile talent Steve Buckwalter, ARDC standouts Trevor Kobylarz, Carey Becker and P.J. Gargiulo and 358 Sprint Car racer Keith Prutzman.

Rich "Toby" Tobias Jr. of Speedway Entertainment will offer his thoughts on affordable racing technology.

At 6:30 p.m., Brian Hirthler of Four Star Lettering & Graphic Design will install and letter sail panels on the No. 117 Kevin Hirthler.

A busy week of activities are planned for the show.

The BASH Party will feature music for dancing, a cash bar, racing movies (including 2009 footage from the Pennsylvania Dual-Track circuit) and plenty of bench racing. Tickets to the BASH are $10 and will be sold during the show and at the door.

Driver bartending at the Applebee's on 5th Street Highway, adjacent to the small, is planned for Monday, Feb. 22, Wednesday, Feb. 24 and Thursday, Feb. 25 beginning at 9 p.m. each night.

Author Gary Ludwig appears nightly beginning at 4 p.m. and during mall hours on Feb. 21 and 27 to autograph copies of his best-selling book Tommy Hinnershitz, The Life and Times of an Auto Racing Legend, which will be on sale at the show.
