SSP Outback Track Season Opener on Friday Night

Newberrytown, PA (April 19, 2014) – Dover’s Gene Knaub became the third different Late Model winner in as many events this season at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Saturday Night. Lebanon’s Jasen Geesaman took the checkers for the second straight week in the Street Stock 20 lap feature. York’s Patrick McClane won the Xtreme Stock Car 20 lapper. The 15-lap Road Warrior feature was won by York Haven’s Daryl Sipe. Bethel’s Brian Gagliardo won the PENNMAR Vintage Car 12-lap feature event. Zakari Kitner of York Haven claimed his second 12-lap Mini Van feature this season. Keith Dorsey from Thurmont, MD was the Jr. Road Warrior winner.
Saturday night’s racing program also marked the 300th racing event at the Big Track since the Fishers’ purchased the track in 2004. “This is 100 times as many events as Bob Jones, then the promoter of the famed Williams Grove Speedway, said we would be in business when we took over the track,” said Todd Fisher. Bob Jones publicly said that the Fishers’ would be out of business within three races. Fisher also explained, “Jones and I spoke a few months ago and the topic came up and we had some good laughs about it. All is well between us.”
Polesitter Randy Chrisitne Jr. grabbed the early lead of the 25-lap Late Model feature. On the second circuit. Gene Knaub, the other front row starter took the lead from Christine. Midway through the race, a brief caution period bunched up the field. On the restart, Knaub continued to lead over Christine. At the finish, Knaub claimed his 18th career SSP Late Model feature win. Christine Jr. settled for second with Billy Wampler in third. Season opener winner J.R. Rodriguez finished fourth with Steve Billet rounding out the top five. Knaub and Christine Jr. were the heat race winners.
Jim Palm Jr., the outside front row starter, grabbed the early lead of the 20-lap Street Stock feature. From a fifth place starting spot, Chris Derr took the top spot on the second circuit. Derr led until lap6 when Jasen Geesaman made the pass for the lead. The very next lap, Danny Beard became the third different leader in as many laps. Beard led the field with the top five runners very close behind. Coming to the finish, Jasen Geesaman made a pass for the lead going into turns one and two. The pair remained side-by-side down the backstretch. As the pair exited turn four, Beard spun low and down the frontstretch collected a few cars at the end. Geesaman took the checked over Chris Derr. Scott Thunberg finished strong in third, followed by Matt Wampler and Jim Palm Jr. rounding out the top five. Geesaman and Palm Jr. were heat race victors.
The 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event had front row starter Davey Nester lead the first sixteen circuits until Patrick McClane took the top spot away on lap 17. Nester continued to slow with as the race progressed to the finish. McClane claimed his second straight feature at the end with Johnny Palm finishing second. Palm was the Madison House Hard Charger of the race after starting 10th. Jim Jacobs finished third with Dan Snyder and Nester rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Nester and McClane.
Daryl Sipe took the lead on the start of the Road Warrior 15 lapper and went on to take the victory over Dennis Dorosz and Curt McDade. Tim Osheehan and Ricky Weaver completed the top five. Travis Brown and Sipe were heat race winners.
In the 12-lap PENNMAR Vintage Car feature, heat race winner Brian Gagliardo led from start to finish to take the checkers. Scott Rickrode claimed second palce, followed by Larry Felty and Rick Pastor. John Marks rounded out the top five.
Zakari Kitner lead from start to finish to win the 12-lap Mini Van race. Roy Denike finished second, followed by John Kitner in third. Richard Wolfe finished fourth.
Daryl Kump won his first career SSP Figure 8 race leading from start-to-finish. Ricky Weaver came from a fifth place starting Spot to claim second over Dennis Dorosz. John Drummer and Richard Siegman rounded out the top five.
Friday Night, April 25, the second round of the Spring Shoot-Out Series will take place at the Outback Track featuring Quarter Midgets, Karts and Adult Speedcars.
On Saturday, April 26, racing action returns to the Big Track with the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown Night. The PA Sprint Series returns to SSP along with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stocks, Road Warriors and Mini Vans/Jr Road Warriors. Racing begins at 6:00 p.m.

- Madison House XSC Hard Charger Award – For every regular season Xtreme Stock Car feature event, Madison House will present a Hard Charger Award to the driver that improves the most positions from their starting spot in the feature event. The winner will receive $25.00 compliments of Madison House (York) and be eligible for post-season awards for accumulating the most Hard Charger Awards during the season. To be eligible, the driver must be on the lead lap and finish the race. If two drivers improve the same amount of positions, the tiebreaker will be the driver starting closer to the pole position being awarded the Hard Charger of the race.

The Next Wednesday Night Test & Tune is on April 23
The next Wednesday Night Test & Tune session will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. It is open to any type of racecars capable of competing on the 4/10 mile oval. The cost is $12.00 per person for pit passes and a $20.00 fee for each racecar entering the pit area ($32.00 per car & driver combination). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. with open track time from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. by class. Each session will be 6 – 8 laps per session. The grandstands are open free to the public. Each class will receive 4 to 5 rounds of 6/8 laps each or more if time permits. The fuel pumps from Miller’s Racing Parts will not be open. Anyone needing fuel should contact Miller’s Racing Parts directly at 717-766-0181. The main concession stand will be open throughout the night.
Also on Wednesday night, there will an open practice session for quarter midgets and karts at the Outback Track from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. under the lights. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with open practice from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The cost will be $20.00 per driver with no charge for anyone else entering the grandstand and “cold pit” areas. All Outback Track participants should enter the pits from the Kise Mill Road entrance behind turn 2 of the “Big Track.”
- Track Rental for the “Big Track” and the “Outback Track” – The “Big track” and the “Outback track” are available for rent for testing and tuning purposes. The “Big Track” rental fee is $1,400.00 for 4 hours and may be split between a maximum of five-(5) drivers/teams. Only one car is permitted on the track at a time. If an ambulance is requested, it is an additional $75.00 per hour. For nighttime rentals at the “Big Track”, an additional $100.00 per hour will be charged for lights.
The rental price for the “Outback Track” is $400.00 for 4 hours during the day /$500.00 at night and may be split between a maximum of five-(5) drivers/teams. To reserve either track, please call 717-292-1696.
- Repeat Fan Discount Continues for 2014 – The popular “Repeat Fan Discount” program will continue at SSP in 2014. There is a $2.00 repeat fan discount for each person with a ticket stub from races during the previous week’s events completed only. Returning fans are encouraged to write their name, address and phone number on the back of the stub to be entered into special drawings during and at the end of the season for great prizes. The Repeat Fan Discount is not valid for pit pass purchases.
